Post subject: | The Blue Comet Survivors: Where is Encke? |
According to published reports from credible sources there should be up to 7 cars from The Blue Comet still with us; observations Tempel, DiVico and Biela; coaches D'Arrest and Westphal; and combines Halley and Encke. I know the location of all but Encke. What we do know is that she is not the combine in NM, that's Halley, and she's not at Steamtown, that's #303. According to the book "Trail of The Blue Comet" she was held by NJT for the NJ Museum of Transportation after use as an office in Harrison, NJ until 1987, but she's not on their roster and there doesn't seem to be any trace of her. Was she scrapped after 1987? That would make her the most recently departed Blue Comet car (coach Winnecke was scrapped in 1985). Rob PS: DYK that circa 1940 a four car Blue Comet was rather common (combine, two coaches, obs) with a CNJ 4-4-2c up front! All those pieces still exist! |
