A recent thread was posted on Trainorders regarding this wreck: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,3538777

This got me looking through my roster notes and source material, so right now I'm trying to figure out which cars were in the consist.

Some additional Trainorders threads which helped in identifying several of the cars:

http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?18,3268526

http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?4,810719

Just for background, this was the eastbound #4 Southwest Limited, the consist of which was doubled up, as the Lone Star (EB #16/WB #15) had just been cancelled, which resulted in the rerouting of the Southwest Limited to continue service to Lawrence.

So far, I've identified the following cars as being in the wreck. If anybody knows of additional cars, feel free to add.

AT&SF baggage-express #3552 (Budd, Lot #9601-209, 1957) to Amtrak baggage #1066 (1971) to HEP #1207 (1978) wrecked Lawrence and listed as subsequently sold in 4-1985--presumed scrapped.

UP 10RM-6DB sleeper #1436 Pacific Ridge (Budd, Lot #9660-039, Plan #9522, 1950) to Amtrak #2629 (1971) wrecked Lawrence and listed as subsequently retired in 1980--presumed scrapped.

UP 11DB sleeper #1508 Placid Vale (P-S, Lot #6958, Plan #4198, 1956) to Amtrak #2267 (1971) wrecked Lawrence and listed as subsequently scrapped later that year.

AT&SF Hi-Level 68 seat chair-transition #548 (Budd, Lot #9679-320, 1964) to Amtrak #9922 (1971) wrecked Lawrence and subsequently sold to Les Kasten-ITAX, mentioned in one of the threads linked to above as scrapped last year.

SP 12DB sleeper #9402 Golden Orange (P-S, Lot #6873, Plan #4139, 1950) to Amtrak #2292 (1971) wrecked Lawrence and listed as subsequently retired in 1980--presumed scrapped.

AT&SF 24DXR sleeper #912 Indian Squaw (P-S, Lot #6757, Plan #4100B, 1947) rebuilt to 11DB sleeper to Plan #6007A (1964) to Amtrak #2220 (1971) wrecked Lawrence and listed as subsequently retired in 1980--presumed scrapped.

SP 48 seat diner #10211 (Budd, Lot #9624-040, 1950) to Amtrak #8061 (1971) wrecked Lawrence and listed as subsequently retired in 7-1981--presumed scrapped.

NP buffet lounge coach #497 (P-S, Lot #6739, Plan #7511, 1947) rebuilt to Lewis & Clark Traveller's Rest (1955) to BN to Amtrak #8353 (1971) wrecked Lawrence and listed as subsequently as sold in 11-1979--one of the linked threads mentions that this car is now in Topeka--is this the #497, or another one of the Lewis & Clark cars?

AT&SF 36 seat diner #1477 (Budd, Lot #976, 1937) to Amtrak 48 seat diner #8030 (1971) wrecked Lawrence and listed as subsequently scrapped in 1981

CB&Q 5C-6DB sleeper #453 Silver Swan (Budd, Lot #9641-169, Plan #9539, 1956) to BN to Amtrak #2203 (1971) wrecked Lawrence and listed as subsequently retired in 7-1981--presumed scrapped.

AT&SF baggage-express-messenger #3683 (AC&F, Lot #04-4269, 1955) to Amtrak baggage #1170 (1971) to HEP #1263 (1978) wrecked Lawrence and listed as subsequently retired in 2-1980--presumed scrapped.

AT&SF dormitory-barber shop-shower-28 seat club lounge #1391 (Budd, Lot #9629-001, 1946) to Amtrak dormitory-club lounge #3382 (1971) wrecked Lawrence and listed as subsequently retired in 10-1981--sold to John Threadgold (Houston) (1982) sold to John Anderson #800223 (Long Beach, CA) (1990) to San Bernardino RHS (2013)

In addition, another Santa Fe baggage is listed as wrecked in October 1979--was this also in the consist of the #4 at Lawrence?

AT&SF baggage-express #3460 (AC&F, Lot #3367, 1950) to Amtrak baggage #1173 (1974) to HEP #1259 (1978) listed as wrecked in 10-1979.

In addition, one of the linked threads mentions a Santa Fe 10-6 sleeper as being in the consist, but source material would appear to disagree:

AT&SF 10RM-6DB sleeper #1603 Palm Haven (AC&F, Lot #3359, Plan #9014, 1951) to Amtrak #2752 (1971) listed by Randall as sold to M. Katch & Company in 1976.

Other cars I have listed as wrecked in 1979, but without date or location info are:

NYC 10RM-6DB sleeper #10129 Keene Valley (Budd, Lot #9662-023, Plan #9502, 1948) to PC #4271 to Amtrak #2832 (1973) listed as wrecked in 1979 and as subsequently retired in 1980.

SP economy baggage #6716 (PC&F, 1962) to Amtrak #1012 (1978) listed by Palmieri as wrecked in 1979, listed by Warner as retired in 9-1979.

SP baggage dormitory #3106 (Budd, Lot #9614-040, 1950) transferred to T&NO #304 (1951) transferred back to SP #3106 (1961) to Amtrak #1533 (1971) listed as wrecked 1979 and listed as subsequently sold in 5-1984 to Terry Herweh-RR Museum of Greater Cincinnati.

AT&SF 44 seat chair #2923 (P-S, Lot #6842, Plan #7503A, 1950) to Amtrak #4527 (1971) listed by Palmieri as wrecked in 1979, listed by Warner as retired in 1979.

Does anybody know if any of the 4 above cars were also in the consist of the #4 at Lawrence?

If anybody knows of additional cars involved in this wreck, feel free to add! Thanks in advance!

In that same Trainorders thread (http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,3538777), the consist of the wrecked #4 was posted, so some corrections and additions:

First, the following cars that I had previously noted as being in the consist were not in the #4 wreck:

UP 11DB sleeper #1508 Placid Vale (P-S, Lot #6958, Plan #4198, 1956) to Amtrak #2267 (1971)--this car was wrecked in 1979, just not at Lawrence, and was subsequently scrapped later in the year.

NP buffet lounge coach #497 (P-S, Lot #6739, Plan #7511, 1947) rebuilt to Lewis & Clark Traveller's Rest (1955) to BN to Amtrak #8353 (1971)--this car is listed by Palmieri as wrecked in 1979, just not at Lawrence, and was sold in 11-1979--one of the linked threads mentions that this car is now in Topeka--is this the #497, or another one of the Lewis & Clark cars? One of the linked threads mentions that a NP Lewis & Clark car was in the wreck--it wasn't the #497, but one of the 1954 Holiday Lounges (see section 5 below).

Second, cars that I had previously noted as wrecked in 1979, but unsure if wrecked at Lawrence, were not in the #4 wreck:

AT&SF baggage-express #3460 (AC&F, Lot #3367, 1950) to Amtrak baggage #1173 (1974) to HEP #1259 (1978) listed as wrecked in 10-1979.

Third, this car was noted in one of the linked threads as being wrecked at Lawrence, with Randall listing it as sold in 1976--this car was not in the #4 wreck:

AT&SF 10RM-6DB sleeper #1603 Palm Haven (AC&F, Lot #3359, Plan #9014, 1951) to Amtrak #2752 (1971) listed by Randall as sold to M. Katch & Company in 1976.

Fourth, this car that I had previously noted as wrecked in 1979, but unsure if wrecked at Lawrence, was indeed in the #4 wreck:

NYC 10RM-6DB sleeper #10129 Keene Valley (Budd, Lot #9662-023, Plan #9502, 1948) to PC #4271 to Amtrak #2832 (1973) wrecked Lawrence and subsequently retired in 1980--presumed scrapped.

Fifth, the following cars are listed as being in the consist of the wrecked #4:

AT&SF 4DB-4C-2DR sleeper #1813 Regal Dome (AC&F, Lot #3358, Plan #9011, 1950) to Amtrak #2350 (1971) wrecked Lawrence and subsequently retired in August 1981, sold in 1982 to KCS, sold in 1990 to Jon Clark, sold in 1991 to AT&SF as parts source, sold in 1994 to Erman Corporation--presumed scrapped.

NP Holiday Lounge (14 seat parlor 32 seat buffet lounge) #492 (P-S, Lot #6937, Plan #7642, 1954) to BN to Amtrak #3750 (not applied) to buffet lounge #3352 (lounge seats reduced to 27, parlor redesignated lounge seating) (1971) wrecked Lawrence and subsequently sold in July 1981 to Ringling Brothers #40. Current status unknown.

Sixth, besides the #9922 listed above, the following Hi-Level cars were also in the consist:

AT&SF 68 seat chair-transition #534 (Budd, Lot #9679-166, 1956) to Amtrak #9908 (1971) wrecked Lawrence to HEP chair-transition-dormitory #39908 (1981) wrecked, 9/22/1993, #2 Sunset Limited, Big Bayou Canot, AL, and subsequently scrapped later that year.

AT&SF 68 seat chair-transition #537 (Budd, Lot #9679-166, 1956) to Amtrak #9911 (1971) wrecked Lawrence to HEP chair-transition-dormitory #39911 (1980) sold in 2003 to AAR.

AT&SF 72 seat chair #725 (Budd, Lot #9670-320, 1964) to Amtrak #9925 (1971) wrecked Lawrence to HEP chair-transition-dormitory #39925 (1980) wrecked, 10/9/1995, #1 Sunset Limited, Hyder, AZ, and subsequently scrapped in January 2003.

AT&SF 72 seat chair #729 (Budd, Lot #9670-320, 1964) seating later reduced to 68 to Amtrak #9929 (1971) wrecked Lawrence to HEP chair-transition-dormitory #39929 (1980) sold in 2003 to Bucol & Associates, later sold to Railway Service Contractors Incorporated (MJRX) #39929 and stored in Granite City, IL.

AT&SF 72 seat chair #713 (Budd, Lot #9670-166, 1956) to Amtrak #9953 (1971) wrecked Lawrence to HEP #39953 (1980) later modified for and assigned to Heartland Flyer stored at Beech Grove in 2004.
