| Post subject: | Useful EMD Maintenance Instructions |
This list was developed by going through older EMD Maintenance Instruction (MI) indexes, and identifies some of the MI's that are particularly useful for general reference and may have applicability to a variety of products and situations. Some of them are no longer identified in the recent indexes, which may show only the items EMD has currently in print on the shelf to distribute. Many are no longer available from EMD, they are "find them where you can". This list is not just locomotive MI's, it includes a few of the more informative marine/industrial topics that pertain to EMD engines in service other than on railroads. Of course to make use of these you need a set of EMD MI's, and you get those either by donations from retired EMD or railroad employees or their families, or by buying them at train shows or on eBay. If you hope to get them by donation you need to RESPOND when the families of deceased employees offer this kind of material, and not give snarky answers like "what business is it of yours" when they ask you about your organization's collections and archives policies. This kind of information is hard to find, it is often worth far more in the savings of time and effort for your museum than the value of the document to paper collectors, and needs to be taken seriously when someone offers it to your organization. So here is the list along with the normal disclaimer that it may have errors, and if it does you are welcome to identify them and correct them. You use it at your own risk. Keep in mind that MI sets issued in the 1970's and later usually do not have the topics issued back in the 1940's.
