Sunday i went to Encampment Wyoming to begin the process of moving a very rare caboose to the local museum for restoration. The caboose was purchased 2nd hand from a Chicago dealer in 1907 ish. We believe from the design that its a NYC 18000 series caboose from 1891.
More pictures when we do the actual move at the end of November.

Nice roof -- it appears in good shape too.

Great work as always, Michael.

Were you ever able to find trucks for it? I know you were searching.

Very cool! Is the side door original?

I would be inclined to doubt that. This is the only NYC-design caboose photo I've ever seen with such a side door.

One thing that does look interesting is that the door has a window in it that looks like the others, which leads to the question--if it isn't an original door, who put it in? NYC or the purchasing road?

Ah, the mysteries of railroad preservation. . .

Obviously I wondered as well, which is why I asked. The side door is unusual, but the siding and window both look, at least from what I can see in the photo, to be very consistent with the car body. On the other hand, it seems odd to have a window quite so close to the door. Interesting to know the history.

The door we think was added by the S&E or possibly by the dealer prior to delivery, the window i think was re-used in the doors, but i will take more pictures when i go there next time it certainly isnt in the correct position on the bodyside obviously. The door the other side is missing sadly. The roof isnt original but did have a roofwalk attached probably S&E again. Original roof covering would be canvas and tar no doubt.
