Post subject:  Portable Lathes and Friction Bearings

Was wondering, on diesels and rolling stock with friction bearings, how do you support the axle when using a portable wheel lathe?

Only thing I can think of is pull the waste/journal pad, insert a filler block and spare brass under the axle then lift with a jack under the journal box (thus there is a solid block between the jack head and the axle brass).

Any better way (short of removing axles from under the equipment) to do this?

You jack under the traction motor axle bearing caps, plain bearings or otherwise.
