Well yesterday saw the initial work to bring this NYC native to the museum in Encampment Wyoming for restoration.
We got her lifted and separated from the house it had been joined to since 1948.

Tomorrow sees the frame arrive to go underneath and then the delivery to the museum friday and saturday will be set down days on the museum display track.

This will be my 4th recovery since 2007.

Mike, you are living the dream, as they say.

Too bad this one doesn't go into your restoration silo.

I think I see original marker lamp brackets still on the car.

Shouldn't there be an award for recovering ancient cabooses and rolling stock on the Prairies?

There must be something about Wyoming and old and unexpected railroad cars.

Some years ago, the Illinois Railway Museum obtained a early steel box car for either Wyoming or western Nebraska. The car is a 1906 car that was designed by Wm McKeen (of motorcar fame). It had been de-trucked and used by the UP as a storage shed.

I remember that Brian, we are lucky here because the weather is kind to wooden structures and all materials actually, but yes we do have and still have some remarkable structures and cars to recover in due course.
Here are more photos of the NYC caboose project from yesterday, we put the frame under and are ready to move to the museum on tuesday.

Having looked at NYC caboose histories i believe that this must date from a NYC predecessor as the 17000-19000 series NYC cabooses were built from 1906 onwards...this one sold 2nd hand in 1907 must be earlier, it also has oak bolsters re-inforced with steel...anyone out there know if this style was in use before NYC and they just carried on using it ?
