Couple of photos taken this past Saturday at the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum. The first shows the sand dome of Chesapeake & Ohio Kanawha #2789 being moved into the original section of the museums Shop building. This dome was painted over 20 years ago (possibly with Imron paint) and has sat outside since that time. Obviously, it has suffered some deterioration over the years and has been brought in to have the rust needlescaled and eventually repainted and lettered. The second photo shows the wood stove "kitbashed" by museum members and now installed in the Shops insulated West Annex. Although resembling a "space rocket", the stove actually does work and had the Annex up to 62 degrees in the afternoon.

Les, is the 2789 moved in out of the weather for the winter, or does she sit outside all year?

Alan -

The 2789 now sits inside the Shop at all times, and is moved outside on most Saturdays for visitors to photograph. In the winter when the museum is not operating trains, the tender is removed and kept outside so that more of the other equipment can be moved inside for protection and for restoration purposes due to the limited track space inside the Shop.

I know that steam locomotives require hundreds of thousands if not millions to fully overhaul, but is there any chance of a fundraiser or grant to have 2789 run again? Also what work would she need to return to service?

I believe the restoration work has meant to get to full operational. Obviously longer than expected, but whatever it takes.
