An interesting demonstration of the use of cranes and heavy hauling equipment to move a locomotive through public streets in the middle of Las Vegas at night, for display at a trade show, including spotting it inside a building: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_99GpkYz28 |

And another video providing an overview of the locomotive at the mining industry trade show in Las Vegas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zmlg_DERFrg |

Only in Vegas. As someone experienced in trade show exhibits, I can't even comprehend how expensive that exhibit must have been. |

Hello, There goes the marketing budget for our division! (Just kidding!) Recently I read the EMD 2 stroke may not meet Tier 4...I wonder if they will move to the C175-20 engine? which may be in one of the mining trucks beside this locomotive. The C175-20 is high speed 1800 RPM....The C280-16 (formerly 3616) is another choice since it's 900 rpm.....very heavy though. Cat has been waiting to ramp up the C175 at the Lafayette Engine Center. EMD is developing a 4-stroke-cycle Tier IV engine based upon the existing 265H design. Better late than never... Dave |

The C280 (updated 3600) was designed to replace the EMD 2-stroke engines, with the same RPM range and similar sizing and auxiliary placement. I am really surprised one of those ex-UP SD90 units floating around hasn't been repowered by a C280-16 as a test mule. It's worth mentioning that the failed MK5000C, powered by the 12-cylinder 3612, ran at 'Alco RPM' (1050 or 1100, I don't remember which) and the 3600 was notorious for breaking crankshafts at this RPM (which happened on the MK5000C). "I am really surprised one of those ex-UP SD90 units floating around hasn't been repowered by a C280-16 as a test mule." Wasn't that the game plan for Cummins to make its entry into the freight locomotive market with a 4200HP version of its QSK-95 and the CECX 1919? Announced with much fanfare in late 2013, it was supposed to be in service this past summer. |

Hello, With Cat owning EMD, the Cummins may live in the rebuild world for that brand. I don't recall the back story on the 3612 MK failure but it may have been an application problem. I don't know how many 280's (3600's) are on the offshore oil platforms but there are herds of the spark ignite G3600's being installed to move Marcellus gas. The pipeliners like them.
