Is 1522 superheated?
Did they build any mainline engines saturated?

1522 is superheated. I don't know if or how many mainline steam locomotives are saturated, and I myself wouldnt bet on many, just because of the fact that with superheater units you can get more tractive effort out of a particular engine, and thats always a plus when you want to add several extra cars to your consist.

I would suspect that the transition period from saturated steam to superheated steam was probably 1900 to 1920. It should be noted that there were a number of locomotives that were rebuilt from saturated steam to superheated steam. Whether or not a locomotive would have been modified was dependant on it's age, wheel arrangement and performance requirements of the railroad. Many locomotives had long service lives of forty to sixty years too.
