Sorry but i really have to complain this time about the locking of the Wasatch thread......it was NOT their fault that someones name came into the course of the thread.....You need to start kicking the perpetrators of the the comments NOT the company or person starting the thread.
I had to say this online as we cant contact moderators.

Me, too.

I sent a PM to the moderator pointing out that only one post mentioned names.

I should have also said it was a single, snarky post obviously intended only to attack the
original poster and was far off the topic.

Just like when your kids are squabbling, it's easier to send them all to a time out as opposed to monitoring every single thing that's said after you first hear the fight...
Being a mod is the very definition of a thankless job.
Did it once myself and I'd never do that again.

Concur -

Commenting on ongoing legal action is always rather sticky, and I say so as one who has done so fairly regularly. Citing and discussing a public document is fair game if it is relevant somehow to the general discussion and the remarks remain within the bounds of civil discourse. The rules of engagement for this forum pretty clearly spell out what is permitted (except for a minor quibble about the meaning of the word 'argument' as used by a barrister v. the word's meaning in common usage). The remark which I saw before it was removed did not seem to meet this standard.

"Have we been asked to go back to UP? I am not at liberty to discuss this topic.[emphasis added] There are many changes taking place at UP in terms of the steam shop. Time will tell how these changes will play out. I suspect that not too much more will change until the pending legal actions are fully resolved. As far as I understand, there is no near solution to these situations. I could very well be wrong on that matter."

I think Brother Rimmasch has said what he can on the issue and unless someone has something concrete to add we should respect that.

We have a policy, going back to the origin of this board, of not editing post, or deleting one post within a thread. We occasionally will pull a very offensive post, but try to keep the discussion intact.

As a result in most cases we either warn or lock... in this case there was a complaint, so the thread is locked.

It would be appropriate and welcome to restart the discussion... You can reread the old post and likely will see which posts got the thread locked...

As I read over the entire thread multiple times I cannot find any personal attacks or anything that jumps out at me as cause for locking the thread.

Is there a post or a part of a post that has been deleted that if in place would result in this making sense?

I find it hard to believe that basically saying "no comment" and mentioning the existence of an unspecified lawsuit is grounds enough for locking a thread. There must be something more to this. I would really like to understand what is going on here. If someone wants to explain it, maybe its better to send me a PM so Randy doesn't lock this thread too.

The post that caused the problem is no longer there, but I did see it, and it was pretty jive...

I saw this morning the posting that caused this thread to devolve. It had "troll" all over it - from a name I have never seen before on this site, full of grammatical mistakes, and it just slung mud at John, making a few statements that simply aren't true.

An open note to the people creating these "troll" accounts: don't you have anything better to do? What is the attraction to "trolling" people on this site?

I have noticed these posts do contain just enough accurate info that they must come from people who are around the hobby - not just random strangers.

There's the problem right there. You're fighting online abuse with a really old playbook.

Abuse is an arms race. You have to evolve both with the ever changing methods of trolls, and new understandings of how they work. For instance your policy on "not deleting individual posts" has evolved, as well it should.

Well we are dealing with railfans and some of them have mental issues of one kind or another. And not that many are all that good at expressing themselves.

Recall how I noticed a bunch of threads being necro'ed and wondered if something was up?

Being a moderator is a thankless job.

Thank you Moderators for all that you do!!!!!!

It is very clear that I have a group of dissenters that follow everything that we do. They aim to kick me in a portion of my anatomy that is located just above my knees and just below my belt. Those who engage in such activity are normally void of the same said anatomy located in the same place as noted above to which they target me so often. Such behavior is sad and though I would like to say understandable, to me, it is not.

I have done the best I can to answer the questions that were presented in different threads. If I have failed to address a subject, question or concern, please let me know.

Kindly,

Don't worry, John, until they stop talking about you at all. Accomplishment can be measured to some extent by the volume and vehemence of its detractors.

Kelly,

JB Weld is a far superior product! We used it on a boiler repair job to install side sheets....worked great! You should try it some day. Only real hacks know the real secrets....

Rumor has it that it will be added to the ASME list of approved materials.....

;-)

As to J-B Weld, many years ago I had a race car engine that threw a rod and knocked out a chunk of the block casting. J-B Weld came to the rescue and the engine went on to a second life. The weld held the entire time.
