As part of our ongoing interior restoration of the Union Pacific 369/3669 dining car at Travel Town, we need to replace at least two of the glass "globes" (is that the correct term). The light fixture includes a steel tube mounted to the ceiling with a brass collar at the bottom witch screws down to compress a ring of "fingers" which clamp onto a formed ring in the glass globe itself. Since I'm sure our diner isn't the only one left in existence that used this style of light I'm posting this here to see who else might use this kind of fixture, and if you've needed to find replacements what did you do? Please see the series of attached images. Greg

They can make them out of plastic. |

Rejuvenation http://www.rejuvenation.com/catalog/products/jackson-park "Jackson Park" schoolhouse pendant light is not a perfect match, but not too bad either, and off the shelf! - Doug Debs

I'm not 100% sure how large this lamp is. The datasheet is a little confusing. Is the white glass diffuser 10" or 15-3/4" diameter? If you're interested, I suggest calling them to be sure. - Doug Debs |

Try your Home Depot or Lowes and ask them where you can find the correct globe as they will have resources for replacement glass. Or, go to a good lamp shop as they may have other resources. Don't settle for a plastic or non similar globe. Yours looks similar to the schoolhouse style globes. |

The folks here don't even seem to know what a ceiling light is. I'm exagerating a bit of course, but as a rule they seem to be next to worthless. Greg |

It means we would have to replace all the lights, but that might still be cheaper than having custom ones made. Greg |

atsfm177 wrote: Since I'm sure our diner isn't the only one left in existence Besides the #369/#3669 at Travel Town, there are at least 12 modernized or streamlined heavyweight UP diners (in several configurations) which are owned by various museums and shortlines and at least 1 car still owned by UP. These listings come from the UP passenger car section of Don Strack's website: http://utahrails.net/pass/pass-index.php OWR&N #514/#264/#4068/MofW #900631 was sold in 1976 to private ownership, current status/location unknown. #311/#3611/#4611/MofW #906204 was sold in 1993 to a museum in Gering, NE. #312/#3612/MofW #906201 was sold in 2002 to the Orange Empire RY Museum. #313/#3613/#4613 was sold in 1987 to the Hall County Historical Society (Grand Island, NE), and was later moved for display at the Golden Spike Visitors Center in North Platte. Photographed on 6/19/2010 by M.J. Scanlon: http://www.railpictures.net/images/d1/3/8/0/2380.1280400232.jpg #316/#3616/#4050 was sold in 1972 to Jones Properties-Travelers Rest in South Carolina, current status/location unknown. #318/#3618/#4051 was sold in 1970 to the Junction Motel in Antonito, CO. As of June 1993 at Morrison Knudsen in Boise, then moved in 2008 as RTCX #4051 to Nampa, ID, sold in February 2009 to Orange Empire and moved to Perris as RPCX #4051. #322/#3622/#4622/MofW #906206 is listed as stored in Cheyenne. #353/#2453/#4053/MofW #904365 was sold in 1987 to a museum in Hermiston, OR. #356/#2456/#4056/MofW #904379 was sold in 1984 to the Deer Creek Scenic RR in Heber City, UT. Is this car still there? #357/#4057/MofW #904367 was sold in 1986 to the Inland Northwest Chapter in Spokane, WA. #363/#2463/#4063/MofW #904384 was sold in 1987 to the Great Western RY as #4, donated in 1999 to the North Alabama RR Museum (Chase, AL), departed Colorado in December 2002, arrived at the museum on 4/1/2003. More info in this thread: http://www.rypn.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=36052 #325/#3625/#4052 was sold in 1972 to the Salt Lake, Garfield & Western as #711, and was later resold to an unknown party, current status/location unknown. #326/#3626/#4053 was sold in 1972 to the Lions Club in Milford, UT, for use as a clubhouse, still there as of 1/24/2007: http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=634316 (John K. Pack). #328/#3628/#4054 was sold in 1972 to Overland Rail Travel, and was resold in 1979 to the Pacific Southwest RR Museum. There is another diner located in Elbe, WA, lettered for the Mt. Rainier Railroad Dining Company as MRSX #481 and named Lewis. This might be one of the cars listed above as status unknown, or another car altogether. This car is currently stored with 2 of the Erie cars from the American Freedom Train; the last lubrication date stenciled on the kitchen-end truck (with a mix of Hyatt and Timken rollers) is 6/21/1997, Mount Rainier Scenic RR (MRSR), Mineral, WA. The Armour Yellow paint is underneath the current off-red dip (the reflective Signal Red stripes in particular can be seen, as the red paint on top is starting to crack), but I didn't look up close for or see any signs of the car's former UP number. Some of the outer panes of the double pane Adlake windows have been broken and there is side sill rust. Here's a picture I took back on July 19th: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=3906296 |
