Not really railroad related as such, but an interesting story about interesting machinery, including a power plant that we normally associate with locomotives.

The engine was developed by Napier for a different application, military patrol vessels and torpedo cruisers. The locomotive application was an attempt to find a better use for a high-horsepower, lightweight, compact operation; ditto the Super Pumper.

The Super Pumper supposedly survives in private ownership in Michigan; meanwhile, a Deltic-equipped ex-British marine vessel supposedly survives at a marina on Maryland's Eastern Shore.
