I looked on ITM's website and the last 587 update was last year if my memory serves correctly. Does anyone know how the rebuild is coming along, and when she is looking to be finished?

Dr. Francis Parker sent me the attached photo of recent work on the 587. His photo shows boiler work contractor Bob Gold, assembling smokebox pieces. The lady with the camera is Michelle Yerkeson, project coordinator.

Work is moving along!

Will the 587 be painted green?

Tuscan or Black only. Green was never an N&W tea kettle color and is therefore forbidden.

I'm more interested in the face to be mounted on the front.

Gold. The one and ONLY time that 5632 didn't look good.

Amen to gold not looking good on #5632. Could of been a James Bond "Goldfinger" prop. Absolutely hideous looking. Regards, John.

Finally to see an update on NKP 587. Last time I saw this locomotive in operation was back in 1993 during an NS/NRHS trip from Melvindale, Michigan to Bellevue, Ohio. I missed out it's post-NS career operating for ITM. Hopefully it will be able to join the NEW NS 21st Steam. Guess ITM is going to need to get its rail connections back in order to make it happen.

Any winter updates on the 587 restoration? The ITM website updates end with 2013 so the photo from August showing the smokebox replacement work seems to be the latest. The timeline on this restoration on the ITM website starts in 2007 so 2015 would be year 8 in this current effort. I was able to visit ITM and met Michelle and others back in 2010 I believe and they were still working on the firebox and throat sheet work. Is all boiler work now done? How much running gear work remains to be done?

Is this restoration completely funded by a TEA grant or has ITM had to raise funds of its own? 8 years seems to be a long time to perform this kind of restoration but they do appear to be doing a very thorough job. Hope we are getting much closer to seeing a fire lit in the ol' girl.

TIA,

Rob Gardner

Sorry for the stupid question but what is a "TEA grant"?
