Post subject:  Another "Lost Roanoke" Engines Question

On one of the Yahoo Groups, someone posted a website detailing the 4 N&W engines, etc, etc. Over the years of monitoring the list, all we really hear is something to the effect "the owner of the scrapyard wants a fortune for them..."

Has anyone ever quantified just how much it would take to buy one? $5000, $50,000? What is the price, never mind of course the astronomical shipping and restoration costs?

Just curious.

Thanks,

Previous discussions have mentioned the fact that the owner will not part out the collection. If I'm not mistaken buyer must take the four steam locomotives, the two Baldwin diesels, and the two other (Y6?) tenders. As far as price goes, the figure $100k for all of it seems to stick in my mind. Life being transitive as it is, I'm guessing the steam locomotives will outlast the owner of the scrapyard and someone in the future will be able to cut a reasonable deal.

All right. I guess I missed something last time I saw anything posted on these things.

What are the two Baldwin diesels?

While you're at it, what exactly are the water heaters? I know they are N&W, Thats' about it.

100 G's might not be bad depending on what you are getting.....

We spent 70 on a Q water heater.... *cough cough*

Two of the Chesapeake Western's three Baldwin DS4-4-660 switchers are there. They have the 662 and the 663. The 661 became a Pontiac LeMans unfortunately...

I was told the asking price for the whole lot was $200k. That would include the four steamers, two Chesapeake Western Baldwin diesels, two N&W former Y-3 tenders (which were apparently in the process of being converted to water canteens when sold), four N&W hoppers, and a rather odd-looking flat car (which may have been a steam locomotive tender at some point). I believe the coal dock that the hoppers are sitting on is part of the deal too, but I'm not sure if that includes the land it's sitting on. That's the price I was given 5 years ago when the site first went up, it could well have changed since then, especially since the city seems keen to redevelop that area.

First, go to the "Lost Engines of Roanoke" site on the web, the check out the Briefs section here, where my pictures were posted..
I have been there and seen the locomotives first hand. Worse conditions exist for steam preservation, take the Riverside Park in Lynchburg, where C&O 2760 is rotting into a pile of rust.
There are four steam locomotives, the two Baldwin Diesels, a set of Y-3 tanks and some hoppers. THe hoppers are on a coal dock, in terrible disrepair and likely to collapse before anything is touched on it. The steam locos are sad, partly disassembled, all without tenders, all still covered with asbestos and heavily grown into by vegation. The locomitives are only accessible from the NS side of the yard, and that is posted land - be aware.
The scrapyard staff is genial and pleasent. They know the historical value of what is in there. The owner is never around the yard, but has an extensive collection of steam artifacts in his office. He will not part out the collection and the price is astronomical. I was told by yard personnel that Strasburg wanted at least one of the engines and couldn't loosen him up.
If some railfan group wants to do a good turn, they should get several gallons of used motor oil and go to work on lubing the locomotives. In all sincerity, I believe some of these locomotives are restorable to operating condition. It will take an unprecedented amount of cash to secure them and shop them. We are talking well over a million bucks. The engines are not going anywhere right now, but oiling them would be a good first move.
