When my wife and I were heading out of Chama on our day's trip there in 2012, we stumbled across two 3-footer D&RGW cattle cars right at a road intersection in Dulce, NM. It was obvious that the RR had been pulled up at each end but the rails and cars were left there to slowly rot, I guess. The track existed only right under the cars and the roadbed didn't seem obvious in any direction. As far as I know, they're still there. I found a site with a photo and a map to them here: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/14327538 Just curious if anyone knows why they were left there during the abandonment and who (if anyone) is looking after them? |

I've always understood them to be on the ROW, though probably on a yard track instead of the main line. From the topo map of the era online, they're not detailed enough for the individual tracks. Now, as to the ownership, the Town of Dulce is on the Jicarilla Apache Nation, so if like the situation at Gato (Pagosa Jct), the ownership reverted to the Apaches (Unlike at Gato, the scrappers were allowed to pull the track and associated buildings). Unless the Apaches choose either to have someone come in and stabilize these cars, or a deal is worked out to wisk them off to another location, they will suffer the same fate that Gato is... A slow return to the earth from whence it all came. |
