First introduced in May 1997 by the California State Railroad Museum, Granite Rock No. 10 was taken out of service in 2011 for extensive boiler repairs during which time diesel locomotives pulled the excursion trains. Granite Rock No. 10 is an oil-fired steam engine built by the H.K. Porter Co. for the U.S. Army in 1942.

Are they riveting a new boiler barrel to the original firebox?

If so, was that the 10s firebox, or the firebox that came from one of the Tombstone Junction 0-6-0Ts that CSRM purchased at auction to be a parts source for the 10?

Yes. The original boiler was in excellent condition except for severe external corrosion on the second course, mostly in the area of the longitudinal butt strap. I designed the barrel for the CSRM. Dixon got the contract to build it and install it. By 1996, there was no one in the front office that knew about riveting, so I consulted to shepherd them through the process. The rear tube sheet was replaced also.
