Post subject:  Roanoke Y-6 Question

With the recent posts about the "Lost engines of Roanoke" I would like to know if anyone has ever found any photos on the net of the 2 (or was it 3??) N&W Y-6s that stayed around until the mid-1970s when they were cut up.

I have slides of them (not on the web)taken one week before the Pocahontas was discontinued. Our family rode the train from Cincinnati to Roanoke, and spent a day in Roanoke. We visited both scrap yards. The 2 Y's were on the north side of the mainline as I recall east of the shops, while the smaller engines are south of the N&W line, and may even be nearer the former Virginian. Even then (1970-71) the place was pretty overgrown.

I remember visiting the VTM and seeing 611 also with a piece of plywood on the nosecone for some odd reason. Boy was I happy when we heard she would be sent to Birmingham to run(early 80's).

Ibelieve Mike Eagleson covered them extensively prior to their destruction.
