Obviously, Hauto tunnel has been sealed for several years but I wanted to know if anyone can testify its condition prior to its sealing. Does anyone know, with proper funds of course, if the tunnel could be feasibly reopened, even if not for rail traffic.

I saw the end of the tunnel that eventually collapsed. It was probably 1991 or 1992. That end on the road was very bad. You couldn't enter the tunnel but you could see several large sections of the brick arch collapsed into the tunnel itself.

Could it be re-opened? Sure, but for what purpose? It would cost millions upon millions to do it and what would revenue would be generated by it?

The collapse ended a plan that never really got off the ground to connect Jim Thorpe and Tamaqua with tourist service via the #9 mine site.
