Erie Lackawanna Dining Car Preservation Society Presents: Diner 741 Open House and Display At Rail Expo 2002 Labor Day Weekend ˆ August 31, September 1, and September 2 At the Steamtown National Historic Site, Scranton, PA - 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day Come to Steamtown National Historic Site this Labor Day Weekend and get an up close look at former Erie Lackawanna Diner 741 at the beginning of the project to restore it to full operating condition. The 741 will be on display each day as part of Steamtown's Rail Expo 2002. Special Open House ˆ Sunday, September 1 On Sunday, September 2 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm we will have several special events about the project and the history of railroad dining car service. 3:00 pm ˆ Guided Tour of Diner 741: View the 1925 Pullman elegance that was built into this car. See the work necessary to restore this car. 3:30 pm ˆ Dining Car Service on the Erie Lackawanna: Presentation about DL&W, Erie, and EL dining car service in the Steamtown Theater. 4:00 pm ˆ Presentation by James Porterfield, author of Dining By Rail - The History and Recipes of America's Golden Age of Railroad Cuisine and On the Menu columnist for "Railfan & Railroad" magazine gives a presentation on the history of American railroad dining car operations and service. No memory of train travel survives so vividly as a sumptuous meal in the dining car. James D. Porterfield chronicles the evolution of the dining car from hotcakes hawked in the aisles to gourmet service. Mr. Porterfield will also be available to sign copies of his book (available in the Steamtown bookstore). We will also be releasing the Society's new book, Recipes of the Erie Lackawanna ˆ Dinner in the Diner 1964-1970. It will be available all weekend long.
