From Mid-Continent Railway Museum news release: Mid-Continent is pleased to announce a special train excursion operating from Mid-Continent's North Freedom depot to the south shore of Devils Lake, at Devils Lake State Park, near Baraboo, Wisconsin. The diesel-powered trips will last about two hours and provide unique views of the Sauk County countryside and Devils Lake. Mid-Continent's train will be steam-heated if weather conditions require. Reservations are required and can be made on Mid-Continent's Reservation Page (http://www.midcontinent.org/reservations), or by calling 1-800-930-1385. All trains are round-trip only. Due to lack of facilities, passengers cannot detrain or board at Devils Lake. The route traversed by the Devils Lake Limited was once the mainline of Chicago & North Western (C&NW) from Chicago to the Twin Cities and hosted such famous passenger trains as the Dakota 400. All proceeds from this Special Event will be earmarked for restoring Mid-Continent's steam locomotives back to active service. Help us return steam trains to the Mid-Continent: come ride to Devils Lake October 26-27. SCHEDULE: Saturday & Sunday: 10:00am, 12:30pm, 3:00pm Saturday Dinner Train: 6:30pm Trains will leave promptly, please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to departure time for boarding. What engines would they use? All I've ever seen up there are little switcher type diesels. Did they get a new big diesel engine? |

Brad, My understanding is that they are going to use a couple of Wisconsin and Southern's "New" GP-38s. Although, they do have a large diesel of their own, Ex-Milwaukee Road RSC-2 #988. Allan ![]() ddg14@attbi.com |
