Well, I've got great news. Although I haven't seen any updates on their website about 763, about 5 months ago, their Facebook posted an amazing picture of the engine. Looks like it needs about a year to get done https://m.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=9 ... 4&refid=13 |

I'm not exactly sure how you came to your conclusion about this engine being a year away from being completed based on this picture, but if it were being seriously worked on, it would be in the backshop constructed for that purpose. They have been working on the firebox of #33, doing work on #12 (removing tubes to inspect the interior condition of the boiler) and working on getting N&W 611 out the door at the North Carolina Transportation Museum though. |

I don't think you have any news, really, just conjecture. While 763 has had her rusted jacketing removed, has been cleaned up and had the headlight and mars lamp reattached, there's nothing suggesting that she just needs a "year to get done" I would be interested if anyone here has any concrete info regarding 763's condition and if there are any plans for an eventual return to steam. |

lack of any solid reports of progress you can't get any good timed guesses. Restoring an engine is more goal oriented than time. And you don't know when that picture was taken, but it looks more like a promotional shot. so no reports... we wait...but with 611 about to hit the road, now this...well....perhaps something is up....anyone with info on 763's condition before moving in? Regardless it would take a full checkover like 765. |

This report couldn't be further from the truth. The engine has had no real work other than cosmetic since coming from VMT. It does look decent, but that is because the staff have been sprucing up the engines so that as they sit in the roundhouse they will look as good as possible for visitors. 763 needs a full 1472 day inspection which will I'm sure will include a thorough going over of every system on the engine. Once work starts in the backshop, I'm relatively certain it will take far more than a year. |
