I am finishing up scanning a 14,000 +/- slide collection, about a 4 year project.

I am working on the odds and ends that were at the bottom of the pile.

Found this shot and wondered if anybody knows anything about this car, in another shot it looks like the number is 598.

Hi,

It reminds me of the Southern Railway's open car (pre-Dismal Swamp accident).

The biggest difference is the Southern car had no seating. That can be easily changed.

FWIW

Pretty sure that one is currently at the Sierra Railroad in California. I don't think it's the Lookout Mountain.

It is #598, one of the three Canadain Pacific "mountain cars." This one is on the Sierra.

it looks like it has one of those scanner bars that used to be on freight cars, that dates the picture, perhaps mid 70's

oh poof, says 1970...heh

One of the nice things about this collection is that the Photographer was a Chemist, and he kept very good notes, practicality all the images have location and date information.

It certainly looks like ex-Canadian Pacific "Henry Pickering", formerly "Mount Garibaldi" observation car. It is currently used on the Rocky Mountaineer throughout the Canadian Rockies, but I believe it is actually owned by the West Coast Railway Association. Image

Three of these cars on the CP rebuilt from heavyweight coaches for use on its secondary train through the Canadian Rockies. These were numbered 597, 598 and 599.

All were originally acquired by West Coast Railway Association which sold off two of the cars. West Coast kept 597, sold 598 to a toruist operation in Pennsylvania and sold 599 to Orange Empire Trolley (now Railway) Museum which used it on mainline excursion trains until the coming of Amtrak.

599 was leased and later sold to the Sierra. It would be a neat car for OERM nowadays -- but back in the 70s that was the correct decision.

598 was acquired by the Sierra and was set up with a stand-up bar and with a number of toilets in one end.

Either 597 or 598 was used on the Golden Spike Centennial Limited in 1969. High Iron bought or leased it from George Hart, as I understand it.
