What you should also know, to add to that photo, is that there's an entire book that goes along with it - "The Climax Locomotive" by Thompson and Dunn, and you can find on Amazon and auction sites. Expensive and worth every penny of it. This is the polishing of Casler's earlier book on Climax, with a lot more information added, and really wonderful photos from Walt's collection. Of the three builders, Shay, Climax and Heisler, this is the best builders book that I've ever seen. Lots and lots of shots of the inside of that building, locomotive construction, etc. The erection building in Corry is STILL THERE. Google Earth over to 240 PA 77 in Corry, PA, and it will drop you down to the end view of the structure beside the ex-Erie, E-L, Conrail, WNYP tracks, and the Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission Climax Locomotive works historical marker is clearly visible. Corry has not forgotten! There's a B-class Climax stuffed (tightly) in the community museum there, difficult to view as the museum has very limited hours and you need a very wide angle lens to see it. There's also a nifty Climax mural in the center of town, Google Earth over to 64 PA 426 in Corry and look north on the side of the building, it's a little weatherworn now but it's right out of the Climax Catalog view, quite accurate. Walt Casler was a big influence on me growing up, I got to first meet him when I was 12. Much of my regional steam photography collection dates back to him, and I supplied him with family photos for one of his books on local logging railroads that my family was involved in. He was the 'delivery boy' for both Climax and Heisler, travelling in locomotive cabs as an escort, so he'd been all over the US the hard way, sleeping in engine cabs and taking a passenger train back. The only 'pay it forward' I've been able to do in his memory was help recover some of his original manuscripts of his books for the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. |
