Well, it has 16 wheels instead of eight, but it is going from St Louis to PA :-)

Perhaps over looked in all the news recently is this tidbit quoted from TRAINS Newswire yesterday:

Quote:
Also on Thursday, NS representatives said that, in addition to arranging for the loan of N&W Y6b 2-8-8-2 No. 2156 from the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis to the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, the company will take Union Pacific DD40A No. 6944 to Altoona, Pa., for cosmetic restoration and return it to the Midwestern museum.

So when was the last time, if ever, a DD40 moved over Horseshoe Curve? Certainly an interesting arrangement. It would be fun if it was painted... say... black and white?

The NS head of motive power was heard saying it would be taken to Altoona, painted black, converted to long hood forward and assigned to the Pocahontas Division.

I'm not joking, he did say that.

I still have hopes about a certain SDP45 getting some attention in all of these latest rounds of restorations...

"It would be fun if it was painted... say... black and white"?

A. There aren't enough black and white diesels to make you happy?
B. You'd REALLY do that to a DD40A?

SO a stretch centercab... or are you talking about both long hoods forward?

Neither, I'm talking about relocating the control stand to what was originally the conductor's side, and orienting it to face down the long hood. The cab itself doesn't move, just the control stand.

So, in the coming Transcontinental merger, Armour Yellow loses to basic black?

I am interested to see what all a "cosmetic restoration " might entail. For those interested, there's a debate on the internet whether it will go to Altoona or Chattanooga for restoration. The engine departed Decatur, IL on 34N earlier this AM. The destination of that train is Conway Yard (Pittsburgh, PA).

Oh puh-leze! Re-engining it and using is as a pusher, up the Curve. Not that would be an interesting use of pool-power.

The "cosmetic restoration" of the Centennial will consist of removing its lead based paint, repairing some minor damage to cab and hood doors, some the result of weathering, some due to visitors forcing their way into things, and then repainting and lettering it. It shouldn't be a big job.
