The Lego Golden Spike Ceremony concept is based off of the famous historical event of the same name, which happened in Utah in 1869. During the ceremony, the rail networks of the East and West coasts of the US were connected for the first time with the symbolic driving of a final railroad spike made of solid gold. It's basically the biggest rail-related historical event to occur in the United States.

Lego Ideas is a new program Lego is doing that allows anyone to submit a concept for a new Lego set and if they can somehow get 10,000 people to vote for the set, Lego will consider selling it around the world! The Golden Spike Ceremony Lego set already has over one thousand votes (it's now the top-voted non-fictional rail vehicle-themed Lego Ideas set), but it has a long way to go to get to 10,000. After creating a free Lego ID (which is easy), you can vote for it, too! Every vote counts and if you share it on Facebook and Twitter, more people will see it and vote for it! I believe that railroad history is something that's being forgotten especially among kids, and I feel that my Golden Spike Ceremony Lego Ideas set being on store shelves will be a great way to reach kids, get them interested in railroad history, and keep its memory alive.

I chuckled at how the Thomas C. Durant figure has an obvious scowl compared to Mr. Stanford. Guess they did their research.

Side note: the Golden Spike Ceremony Lego Idea has already had some modest success in terms of media coverage with several articles (mainly in Utah) written about it. Boy, now I really, really feel old, I remember the 100th anniversary of the Golden Spike, saw the steam powered "Golden Spike Special" in Buffalo NY.

What the heck is that thing in the red box in the very middle of the picture ? Does not look like any railroad track tool I've ever seen ? More like a Mid-evil torture instrument, "recant or I'll spike you down to this railroad track and let a steam locomotive run you over once they get around to inventing them in 500 years or so".

Nice Idea, hope it gets some kids interested in RR history.

That's meant to be the Golden Spike itself. Lego doesn't have a railroad spike piece or anything that remotely resembles one, so I had to improvise and design my own. It's made up of three pieces total.

Jack, I think this is a very cool idea and I applaud your efforts. I do hope you can get the "votes" needed to move this forward. I tried to "upvote" the idea but I had to register with the "LEGO" folks. I have way too many "online" registrations already so I am reluctant to add any more.

I thought that may be a "LEGO" version of the original "Golden Spike" but it really, really has to look like a golden spike for this idea to "sell". The Lego folks need to make a new piece that more closely resembles the real "golden spike". That is not too hard, heck they have a bazillion different parts already.
