Don't quote me on it, but I believe it looks at least similar to Reading #1187's original bell. The story can be found on this old thread. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=27345 There used to be a Youtube video of it being rung, but it is now blocked without permission of the author but I found a somewhat blurry picture of the video on Bing that looks like the bell in your picture. http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=rea ... ajaxhist=0

A gentleman sent some photos of a locomotive bell to me. Between the acorn nut on the top, the decorative design near its bottom edge, and the lack of any air ringer, it looks older that the usual run of bells you see. Anyone have any ideas regarding its possible i.d.? He said that the bell rope lever is a modern fabrication to replace the broken original.

Has the gentleman checked for a number impressed into the bell somewhere? That would be the first thing to look for.

I mentioned a locomotive number impressed into the bell. On our ND&W diesel that had a bell added to it off of an Illinois Central steam locomotive, I wondered if the particular ICRR engine could be determined. As you can see by the photo I took today (a bit of chalk added to help with the visual), it's off of a Pacific. This number was up at the top of the bell, but I have heard that some railroads added them inside.
