EMD's hard to overestimate existential bet, since its viability as a first-line manufacturer rests squarely on this engine (which could be be a redesign of the 265H, since a bore of 265mm and a stroke of 300mm yields a 1010 cubic inch displacement.) barring some use of Cat C-175 or C-280's.

Meanwhile, other potential entrants-at least in the form of manufacturers with limited prior rail offerings are beginning their penetration of the market using higher speed, smaller displacement engines. Cumm

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Being ten months late to the Tier 4 product has hurt EMD tremendously, and not just in the railroad industry. There are now almost a year of marine towboat and passenger vessel designs in the EMD engine size range that have been specified mainly around the GE Tier 4 engine packages because EMD did not have a qualifying product. It is going to be a tough climb back.
