Reading a story on the IT from the June 1981 issue of Trains that mentions that several of these were still parked at a scrapyard at the McKinley Iron Scrapyard.

I knew that these had been held onto by the IT at the end of service in 1956 since they thought these nearly new trains had resell value. That of course didn't happen, but I always suspected that they hadn't lasted long into the 60's since I had never heard of any preservation attempts.

Surely as IRM grew, a trainset must've been tempting (Particularly before the Electroliner acquisition circa 1980). Any story to tell about a failed effort to save one of the three trainsets?

Or was IRM setting its sights on an Electroliner?

I can confirm that at least one of the trainsets was still sitting in the scrapyard in St. Louis in late 1977.
