The oil atomizers for the J&L 58 are missing and I will be making new ones, so now is the time to figure out what is the best design. On the 58 oil is fed into the steam pipes about a foot above the steam chest, originally via a hydrostatic lubricator. Ill be using a Manzel two feed mechanical lubricator and running at 180 psi saturated.

It is difficult to find much on oil atomizers, but one illustration that I've seen shows something that looks somewhat like a spoon with holes in it.

The idea is to get the oil into the flow of steam, not to simply drizzle down the side of the pipe. One way is to use something that protrudes out into the center of the pipe. You will want to use a terminal check valve where the oil line meets the atomizer just outside of the pipe, so there's always pressure in the oil line. The Manzel pump should put out several hundred PSI. The cracking pressure of the terminal check isn't critical, but the closer you get to the 180 the better...... the jolt of oil pressure will shove the oil into the spoonish thing, or notched thing, or simply diagonally cut off pipe end, whatever.... where if it hits something and splashes it will sort of atomize and follow the steam into the valve. Some small lokies ran fine without an atomizer, but if you really want to get serious, you can drill and tap a feed hole through the valve bushings on both ends and feed oil through terminal checks directly into both sides of the valve where it's needed most. If you have good oil flow to the valve, the cylinders will also use it, so you won't need to oil them separately.

Thanks for the advice. I have a good idea what I need to do.
