This sort of goes along with McHugh's restoration of W&W's former B&O SW-1 nearing completion. West Chester's former B&O EMD GP-9 No. 6499 often crossed paths with W&W's SW-1 No. 8408 in Wilsmere Yard near Wilmington, DE. I grew up nearby and saw both engines often.
.
McHugh Locomotive & Equipment /MRME, Inc. was contracted by the West Chester Railroad to provide some major heavy mechanical and electrical repairs to the lines #6499 locomotive on-site. The EMD GP-9 had a failure of the D-22-B main generator with alternator assembly back in May of 2014 that had taken the locomotive out of service.

On the morning of October 20th a convoy of McHugh equipment arrived at the West Chester rail yard, consisting of a: 40-ton lift crane, tractor trailer hauling the main generator and other component parts, a 36000lbs GVW service truck with 10-ton capacity boom, and a 12000lbs service truck. Once the equipment was all in place, within an hour the McHugh service technicians had the 18,500lbs main generator set in place. The locomotive then had the main generator dial indicated for alignment, and also had a rebuilt auxiliary generator with blower assembly, along wit h two rebuilt engine blowers installed. There were some additional electrical and mechanical defects that have also been repaired. The #6499 was successfully test operated on Saturday 11/07/15.

The West Chester Railroad operates their big ALCO's as motive power on its scenic tourist trains from April to November over the 8-mile rail line from West Chester to Glen Mills, PA. However the EMD GP-9 is a favorite among some of the volunteer crews at the railroad, and the #6499 has been seen in years past as motive power for the Christmas Season trains.

The West Chester RR will be operating their annual Christmas and Holiday Season trains beginning in late November. More information can be found at: westchesterrr.com.
