Post subject: | Ladysmith damage report.... |
As posted on the SooLineHistory egroups list: "Was in Ladysmith today and surveyed the equipment damage. The caboose appears to have come through without a scratch. The Visitor Center's baggage cart is in pieces. The diesel has broken out windows and maybe some paint loss on the roof. The passenger cars were tipped over and indentations in the ground indicate that they bounced about a foot. The steps are intact. The trucks came partway off/completely off, depending on whether their chains held. The brake rods are twisted. the roofing on the end two cars is partly off. There were pieces off window sash on the ground and from the impact pattern, it's a pretty safe bet that there is extensive window/door damage on the sides that are underneath. Frames appear to be in good shape, but my guess is that they will need two cranes to lift if they want prevent further damage as they right the cars. I was told that the roofing over the steam engine waqs badly damaged but the engine itself was OK. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask." Herb Sakalaucks Colfax RR Museum |
