Working on the start up of an excursion operation

Greeting all,

I am hoping that someone here might be able to help me out a bit. I'm looking for the required inspections for rolling stock and locomotives (such as the CFR 111.111) if available. I am working on a project proposal and this information must be included. I've tried finding it, but the FRA website put me into information overload induced coma!

You would probably be better off with 49 CFR Part 200 and all the other rail-related stuff you will find in 200-299.

What kind of railroad? the requirements change depending on if you are general system, insular, or completely exempt....

Gary - As somebody said, 49 CFR 200-series is a good place to start, but what applies depends... there just is not enough information here to make meaningful suggestions.

Gary - Yes, all that FRA stuff can be confusing and intimidating at first. Been there and done that. :)

Mr. Ramsey, I'll definitely be calling you in the future as things progress. Our plan involves being on the main line for about 5 miles, so we will definitely be needing guidance getting set up.

Gary -

I would strongly suggest you contact Mr. Ramsey sooner than later, unless you're still in the 'just talking' phase. Once you start shelling out nickels for anything, you have to be on the right page, or might quickly find you're out hundreds of thousands of dollars. This is particularly important if you are a tourist operation that plans on 'being on the main'. FRA is quite helpful and is best suited to helping you understanding the rules as they apply in your specific case. They are not 'out to get you', only interested in safety and compliance, so don't hesitate to reach out.

As someone who has done it before, the FRA is your best friend. They can save you a trainload of headaches and if you are starting from the ground up, they are the go to for everything...

I'd also recommend joining ATRRM - our trade group - and attending the spring meeting in Golden, Colorado where you can talk face to face with people who know the business inside and out. There's no substitute for your personal network. It's the best hundred bucks you can spend.
