There seems to be a lot of discussion about whether or not the 2100 and 2101 tenders were swapped.

Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place. The tender seems to have a 2 and then the letter "m". The cab has a 2 and a last digit 0.

You're not. The tender was clearly lettered for "Chessie System" at one point in time, suggesting it is 2101's tender, while the cab appears to be numbered "2100".

I agree, I can see at least "stem" faintly on the side of the tender, undoubtly part of "Chessie System". I had never known of such a debate, everone I know and all of my books regaurd the tenders being switched as fact.

No question. The tenders were swapped. When 2100 was in St. Thomas, Ontario there was obvious evidence the tender had major repairs at one time. New steel sheets down both sides.

Oh my, the memories that come back. . .the sadness that 2101 was damaged in a fire and likely wouldn't run again, the sight of seeing that the tenders were switched to reduce the cost and difficulty of a cosmetic restoration (and noting the rust pattern, the effect of the heat of the fire and where it burned the paint the most), the excitement of 614 returning to service, later seeing 2100 come back (something I never thought I would see), the departure under steam to Ohio that I missed, the saving of the NYC 0-6-0 that went to Indiana, and the loss of the roundhouse. . .and of course, going back, the things I got to see either riding or watching 2101 and 614. . .

Going off topic in regard to 614, I recall how modern it looked alongside a Maryland DOT F-unit and the WM BL2s that were still in service then, even though they were contemporaries in age, how 614 had icicles on it after the steam tests in 1985, and most pleasant of all, how, after a shopping session in Hagerstown, it surprised me with a wonderful whistle in Harpers Ferry on its way to service in Florida. . ."Gee, that's a good sounding horn--no, that's not a horn, that's a WHISTLE!!! It's a STEAM ENGINE!!!". . .and running outside in time to see her at track speed eastward across the bridge and into the tunnel. . .

As a tangent comment, I just watched the B&W movie on DVD "The Egg and I" with Fred McMurry and Claudette Colbert.

The opening is of an SP Daylight powered passenger train with a diesel horn.

Movies can be such a hoot.

Ah, but the Daylights had (and 4449 and MILW 261 still have) air horns in addition to whistles. Both are the horrible sounding single note "honkers" that were common in the days of early diesels. Supposedly the sound carried better, but considering the range of steam whistles, I'm not sure about that.

Speaking of movies, why is the sound so often out of synchronization when steam is on the screen? Like people's lips, steam has a visible as well as audible dialogue.

Sometimes the sound is so off I am reminded of those Hercules movies that were shot in Italian with Steve Reeves, and which had some of the most horrible English dubbing you ever saw!

I live in Hagerstown and saw 2100 nearly every day it was here. The tenders were indeed swapped. Don't know how or why anyone would think otherwise.
