One question: How exactly do driver centers manage to get out of round? Is is from sitting for so long?

Just so the rest of us can feel even worse about how little we accomplish on our own projects during the course of a year, were all these projects started and finished since your last update? How long did these projects take roughly? Just a few weeks or months?

At any rate, it is still inspirational to see all of the work you guys accomplish repairing or reproducing all of this obsolete stuff.

Kelly, thanks for these updates. I'm rooting for ASTA to get the 745 back on her wheels. Great to see the boxes ready for their new crown brasses. They are certainly doing it right.

Hello Rob,

The ASTA is working on getting SP 2-8-2 #786 restored for operation. The SP 2-8-2 #745 is operated by the LASTA. Hopefully, #745 will be steamed up here soon, and maybe we'll get to see her run again. Also, here's hoping that #786 gets to run again sometime in the near future.

Very nice write up, on a very nice project. I'm looking forward to the next installment.

I sure hope, however, that someone picked up that block of wood with the big nails sticking out of it in the lower right corner of the the 13th. picture. Those things are good for lost time accidents.

The article mentions the "cocoon" utilizes a rubber roof. Is this the same grade EPDM you are using for the finished roofs? How does it gold up in what I assume is a "loose lay" application?

GREAT to see the 40's axles are finally getting replaced! Many conditions warranted doing so even 6 years ago!

The boxes look good! What happened to the new (unmachined) set the locomotive went back to Texas with?

What an amazing asset to the industry and preservation movement you and the crew have become! Thanks so much for keeping the trade alive - and taking the time to share the details with us!

Question about #90 and the running gear work;

1) What date was #90 taken out of service for the rebuild?

2) What type of work was performed on the running gear - did I hear correctly that the running gear went from grease packing (?) to oil lubrication? Did I ask that correctly?
