ASR held another 2100 work session on Saturday, March 12 at the West 3rd St. Roundhouse in Cleveland. The following volunteers attended Saturday’s work session: Rick Owing, Jake Crayton, Chris Howell, Perry Krzyzaniak, Eric Kapusta, Gordon Hartschuh, Tiffany Saultz and Steven Harvey.

This week saw the gridding of the firebox get started. This task is more than 50% complete and will be completed next Saturday. Then UT readings can be started. Lapping of four (4) more washout plugs were completed. Volunteers started removing tools and parts that were placed in the auxiliary tender for shipment from WA to OH. The hydro-testing tool for the superheaters was found in the auxiliary tender and placed in the storage container for future testing of the superheaters. Inspection of the auxiliary tender wheels, bearings and brake rigging was started as well. The last component from the failed oil firing system was removed from the middle of the firebox; that being a fabricated steel damper. This will allow the four (4) missing rocking grates to be reinstalled next. Lastly, new safety stairs were assembled and set in place at the back of the cab to provide a much safer means of getting in and out of the cab.

Upcoming Work Session Tasks:
The following tasks are planned for the upcoming work sessions in March including:
• Finish laying out grid lines in the firebox.
• Take UT readings and record for analysis.
• NOTE: Jason Sobczynski has secured the use of a portable Mill Hog that mounts to the interior of the washout plugs and will allow us to cut new gaskets seats on the worst of the badly pitted gasket seats saving many man-hours that would otherwise take week to complete by hand. Approximately 12 of the washout plug seats will have new seats cut in this manner.
• Continue lapping the medium size washout plug gasket seats
• Reinstall washout plugs with new gaskets
• Complete an initial air test and fix all detected leaks
• Complete a hydrostatic test and fix all detected leaks
• Remove historically inaccurate red 3M adhesive reflective material from side skirts and white “2100” numbers from both sides of the cab.

Upcoming Events
• The next work session is Saturday, March 19, 2016 and starts at 9 am.
• Don’t forget to come ready to sign and complete a volunteer waiver and if you are not a member already, come prepared to fill out a membership form and be able to pay your membership dues at that time.

Respectfully submitted,

Rob Gardner
