The Northwest Railway Museum is pleased to announce that its 2-6-6-2 logging Mallet Weyerhaeuser Timber Company 108 has been acquired by the Black Hills Central Railroad. This is good news. I remember riding behind their current mallet what must have been 10ish years ago. The only thing is I hope this won't take away from the restoration and overhaul work that their nonmallet steam engines need. Black Hills is an amazing ride that is a great thing to do when going to Mt Rushmore. |

Picking a small nit, the Black Hills Central Railroad is more accurately described as "an old heritage railroad". It began operating in 1957. Since it began operations on active CB&Q track, train and locomotive crew assignments were filled with CB&Q personnel. Years later, BN pulled out and the connection to the outside world was scrapped. Fantastic news. I'm not surprised and figured they would be on the lookout for another, larger locomotive. I visited a couple years ago and the Conductor was very friendly, I asked him about the other locomotives (Other than the #110) and he said they are not able to pull the longer trains that are usually needed now, so the #110 is highly favored. |
