I am currently doing research for IRM's Russian Decapod, Frisco 1630, and looking for information regarding the following: -lettering on the back of the tender, including tender capacity lettering, coal capacity lettering, etc. I just want to see what Frisco had on the back, if anything. We would put that on the tender accordingly -diagrams/photos of the interior of the doghouse. We want to see how the apparatuses for light, heat, etc. were laid out in there. Let me know if you have anything. |

This is one of my HO models that I've painted and lettered, but the tender rear is lettered correctly. The interior of the doghouse just had a "bench" in it, a light and a foot warmer. Hope this helps.

This helps immensely. Do you happen to have the measurements for the lettering at the top rear of the tender? |

If memory serves, it's 2". Engine number is 12" Number on side is 24" Cab is 8" and sand dome is 6". Many years ago I sent Dave Conrad the drawings for the doghouse and thought I had included some photos with it. That's what they built the doghouse from. |

I realized that your photo fits in with the recent thread here on RyPN entitled "Red Steam Loco Cab Roofs". You might think about posting it there. Les |

Dear frisco 1630: Don is correct, he supplied lettering diagrams, drawings for the dog house and some photos of another Frisco(?) dog house to guide us in the restoration of the 1630's tender and construction (from scratch) of the dog house. All of these materials ought to still be in the Steam Department's "Technical Library", directly above the original section of the "light machine shop". The "pounce" patterns for the lettering also ought to be up there. These were full size tracings on Kraft paper that the late Bob Johnson and I made from the 1621 at Kirkwood. They might be in one of the flat file drawers. John McKelvey might have done the lettering. As you may be aware, Bob Johnson and John McKelvey did a good deal of the work converting the tender from it's Eagle-Pitcher, "clear vision" switching configuration back to it's "road" (read: FRISCO ) full width coal bunker with dog house. Speaking of which, one of my regrets is that the interior of the dog house was never finished, save a bench. As I recall, it was to be lit with a Pyle-National cab light fixture. The floor heater was nothing more than a piece of 1/2" pipe, coiled perhaps 5 turns, about 18" outside diameter and draining (as I recall), directly into the cistern. I think if you look under the dog house you'll see a little patch where it entered. A narrative of the work that was done can be found in c.1972 through 1976 issues of "Rail & Wire (no photos back then). Good luck! J.David PS: If you can't find the drawings/patterns for the lettering, take the time to go to Kirkwood and trace an original again, with all due respect, an HO model is no substitute for the real thing! I've also noticed that the "FRISCO" lettering on the 1630's cabs is taller now than it was before c2014 but I have no idea whether the older or newer size is correct. |

Thanks for the insights everyone, this is all very helpful. Frank, the current lettering on the cab is inaccurate. The story of why that happened is another story for another time... |

This should help with number style/shape. Ignore the striping 1630's cab lettering doesn't look right to me.
