Mention Fred Gwynne at a bar and all I can think of is the incredible film "Ironweed." I would suspect that this film is well known among the RYPN crowd for a number of reasons (mostly because of the "transformation" of D&H equipment at Colonie for the film). It's one of my favorites; Tom Waits and a depressing story. What could be better?

I find it interesting that PRR 1223 makes an appearance. Did they film at Northumberland?

I've been able to positively identify at least a couple locations:

At least one scene in a yard, the one with the distinctive twin water towers, is definitely the heart of Northumberland Yard. I believe the hump scenes are either East Altoona, Northumberland, or an amalgam of the two.

The tower and interchange seen at the 20-minute mark is most positively the former KASE Tower at the north end of Sunbury, Pa.; the distinctive double bridges in the background seen from the tower lead to Island Park and then Northumberland. The train with a set of Alco FAs spurs north from KASE towards Wilkes-Barre, and the following scenes are, in my estimation, 98% guaranteed to be around Rupert/Catawissa/East Bloomsburg, further up the line towards Wilkes-Barre; the bridge over the river in the background is the Reading's Catawissa Branch connecting to the DL&W at Rupert.

Some of my favorite railroad instructional films are from the London Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) in the UK, produced in the 1930s.

Not to hijack the thread, but does anyone know if the 1968 UTU film Moving On, on the history of railroads and railway labor is out there on the net? I saw that film a couple of times at railroad club meetings in the late '60's and early 70's. In fact, I have a soundtrack LP for it that the union gave away at showings they sponsored the year or so after it came out. As a kid, I actually learned some things from that film. Would be nice to have another look at it.
