Thanks for the great photos. My father was always interested in these cars. If you go here http://www.mercitrain.org/#nogo and click on Merci Boxcars by State you will see a listing of all 46 surviving cars.

That's a brakemans shelter. A lot of European rail systems didn't have train brakes on the freight cars until after WWII.
