Post subject:  Type H Tight Lock Coupler Sources

Can anyone point me to sources for Type H couplers? With the hopefully temporary shuttering of Columbus Castings, we've lost our closest supplier. We've stuck out in trying to find them in our neck of the woods (ORHS is located in Northeast Ohio). We'll also consider used in good condition or remanufactured. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Try McConway & Torley, in Pittsburgh. They do most of the coupler casting business, but I do not know if they do type H.

At the outer edge of my expertise here, but also check if you can use type CS controlled slack couplers. As I recall, type H have a fully machined head profile, which has to be expensive. Type CS is as cast, but with tolerances held closer than the common type E,and likely good enough for service other than on the Amtrak corridor.

Maybe try Irwin Car & Equipment, Irwin, PA?

Art - Thanks for the lead. We've contacted McConway & Torley. They do have some standards for Type H. Hopefully they have what we need.

We wouldn't consider changing coupler/draft gear types. As reported here previously, we did find out how well Type H works in a derailment.
