Here's a question pertinent to the recent 3751 trip to the Grand Canyon. The AT&SF had various Chicago-LA trains with the name Grand Canyon. Did these trains actually divert at Williams and run to the canyon rim, or did they go on through, with transportation to the south rim handled by stub trains out of Williams? ryarger@rypn.org |

Bob, Although I was a little young to remember the details, I can tell you from experience that they did divert at Williams amd go to the canyon. In our case, we left Chicago on a Sunday afternoon and woke up Tuesday morning at the canyon station. That was in August of 1954. I had the fortunate opportunity to ride the 3751 to the canyon last month. Dave > Here's a question pertinent to the recent > 3751 trip to the Grand Canyon. My memories from the early 1950's was that the "Grand Canyon" trains from the east carried cars that were set out at Williams in the early morning hours while the rest of the train continued to its West Coast destination. These set-out cars then were moved to Grand Canyon station on a local train. Eastbound cars from the Grand Canyon moved to Williams where they were coupled into the next eastbound "Grand Canyon" train. Please note these are only memories subject to the vagaries of old age. Someone with access to old schedules could confirm. fkrock@pacbell.net |
