Mr. Wilkins asked for additional sources of reading on museology and museum ethics. Here goes:

American Association of Museums "Code of Ethics", 1998;

"Risks and Rewards: Perspectives on Operating Mechanical Artifacts," Hagley Museum and Library, Mark Mapes, ed., 1991;

Burcaw, G. Ellis. "Introduction to Museum Work" Altamira Press, 1997

Malaro, Marie. "A Legal Primer on Managing Museum Collections" 2nd ed., Smithsonian Institution Press, 1998;

Goldfeder, Ron. "Documentation of Artifact Conservation and Restoration in Transportation Museums," (unpublished paper)

"The Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties," Department of the Interior, 1995

White, John H., Jr, "The Railway Museum: Past, Present and Future," Technology & Culture 14:4 (1973);

"Indoor Display of Industrial Collections," CCI Notes 15:4

For the record, comments I make on this board reflect my own opinion, done on my own time, and are not officially the views of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.

Kurt,

Thank you for this list. Perhaps we can all add to this one and make it a regular reference item on RYPN?

Kurt, and all,

I wasn't bluffing either. Hehe, I will have to put the University of Louisville's interlibrary loan dept to work again. They found all kinds of stuff on Britsh steam for me, and not just the railfan oriented stuff either.
