I am interested in older dining cars like this one from Barney & Smith in 1910.

Searching here does not show anything about it since about 2012, when it was moved to Tacoma.

The Tacoma Rail Car Preservation Society web site seems to be inactive.

Anybody know anything?

This antique needs to be indoors!

The car was moved to LeMay Family Collection (separate from the auto museum in Tacoma). It is my understanding that the car is under cover now.

Dan is correct, it's under cover at the LeMay Facility and restoration work is under way, though I have no idea what work is being done or what the proposed timeline may be.

There was some additional discussion here when the car had to be moved. It was stored next to Tacoma Rail's double track lead to the Port's Intermodal Yard. That seemed like a perfect location, and it was, until they decided to do build a new connector track and re-align the two adjacent tracks to accommodate the diamond crossings. Suddenly an out of the way piece of property nobody cared about was in the way of things. It ended up needing moved on fairly short notice.

Wow, very nice car with so much of the interior intact. Reminds me of the DSS&A "Rhinelander" Which arrived at Mid Continent this late summer 2016. Nice web site to visit too. Regards, John.

Don't you mean the sleeping car Duluth?

The Mid-Continent Museum has announced that they are going to build a second Coach Barn for their wonderful passenger car collection.

I am glad to hear that the #1663 has a new indoor home. It is a wonderful survivor of the wood car era.

Why yes I did mean the "Duluth". Not sure where the "Rhinelander" came from. Both cities are up north of me, one had a really cheap beer named after it. More swill than actual beer. Thanks for the correction. Hope to see the "Duluth" in person on Thursday.

The new building is truly needed. So is steam. Thanks for the correction again. For the life of me I cannot figure where I got the names mixed up. But then again I am not a "coach" person who memorized what is out there. Truly amazes me that any interior from cars as old as these, survived to the degree that these two did. Regards, John.

The car "Rhinelander" is also at Mid-continent; but, privately owned. It is a 12 section-state room car that was built the Soo Line by Barney & Smith in 1902. In 1929 it went into work car service.

"Duluth" is a 10 section-state room car built for the Duluth South Shore & Atlantic by Barney & Smith also in 1902. It was sold private in 1934.

Not to hijack my own subject but another ancient wooden sleeping car is the Canadian Pacific #1220 Omemee at the Canadian museum of Rail Transit at Cranbrook, BC. The car also came from Barney & Smith at Dayton around 1906. Retired 1931.

And it also spent many years as a lakeside cottage near Appleton, Wisconsin before going home to the Museum in Canada in 1997. Its stained glass work is amazing.

If the railroad preservation field is lucky; there may be a couple of more of these beautiful wooden cars around someplace.

Omemee is now displayed coupled to Soo Line stateroom - parlor - observation car CURZON (Barney & Smith 1907) which also spent decades languishing on the shores of Lake Winnebago. The Curzon at least has some connection to Cranbrook, being built for Soo-Spokane-Pacific service, and indeed was named for the community where the Spokane International joined the CPR. The Omemee wasn't, although no one can say it never got assigned to the transcontinental train in a pinch. Either way, it's good it's gone to a place with a restoration budget.

Dennis thank you for that link. Again not a wood car guy but that web site was fascinating. Kind of continuing the subject of more coaches found with quite a bit of intact interiors. I live within 30 miles of these 3 cars that went to Canada and never new anything about them. I have friends who live on both Lake Poygan and Winnebago. I am fascinated that they were in my backyard.

Today I got the 10 cent tour of the 1902 Barney and Smith "Duluth" and we got a lot done towards putting the coupler back on the south end using some parts off Soo #1257. The hanger parts {forgot proper names} almost bolted up without modification. Think we need to drill or elongate one hole. I can see where the car shop guys get into this. The history and journey some of these surviving cars have had is incredible. Working in 60 degree weather in November is real nice too. Wish the owners of the NP #1663 the best with their endeavors.
