If you didn't see Mark Basset's latest news piece on his Nevada Northern volunteers from the Ely Times in our Flimsies section, it is worth a look. This well-written news item is precisely the kind of material we should be presenting to the general media. The alternative is to allow a visit by an unknowing reporter who doesn't know a spike from a wheel, who will invariably ask if we played with Lionel trains as a child and further depict us all as middle-aged adolescents who never grew up. We should all follow Mark's lead, providing advance press releases that show our field as a serious, worthwhile pursuit that benefits society overall. Well done, Mark!

I haven't back to Ely in about a year (I was a volunteer/employee '96-'98) and was wondering if you could fill me in. Are the doors and windows back on the (old) carshop? Is Eva still working the front office.

Is the SD9 the museum is now (from what I understand) using as thier primary deisel power causing problems on the rails? BHP replace/repaired alot of track on the Robinson line but the S9s were pretty rough on the rail on the mailine to Shafter. So I can imagine it isn't good for the 90 or 100 lbs rail on the Hiline.

I heard that T.J. has been forsed to retire bause of lung problems, how is he?

If you havenÂ’t been to Ely in about a year, itÂ’s still two years after my last trip. My volunteer efforts are largely WWW based (e.g., co-webmaster for the museumÂ’s Web site), so they can be accomplished from my home base here in San Diego, Calif.

The lower windows on the old coach shed (built 1911; see photo below) were scheduled for installation in June, 2001 and the upper cupola windows were to be replaced this past summer. IÂ’ll be able to give a more complete report after my upcoming trip to Ely next month.

Eva was still working in the front office earlier this year. T.J. Lani retired April 30, 2000 after 56 years of service with the NN, interrupted only by military duty during World War II. IÂ’m not aware of the specific circumstances.

ItÂ’s my understanding that the primary diesel power for the tourist excursions is still Alco RS-3 No. 109. The museum has retained one of the ex-BHP SD9 units, but I donÂ’t know what the plans are for it.

Thanks Kieth, I'll look forward to that update. I was under the impression that the SD9 was now primary power, but I wasn't sure on this so I could've been wrong. The 109 was having problems with a leaking water jacket in the prime mover when I was there, I don't know if this has been fixed or not (no big problem operationally, we'd just have to refill the water every morning before we fired her up).
