Post subject:  Como, Colorado has a Future

I am pleased to announce that after many months of discussion and cooperation among several groups we have established a new partnership with the goal of restoring the Como, Colorado roundhouse and a part of the rail yard to serve as a functioning museum tied together with the recently resort Denver South Park & Pacific RR depot and hotel.

To this end a Narrow gauge steam locomotive will be returned to the roundhouse this summer. Our plan is to have the locomotive on display and under steam for Boreas Pass railroad days this August.

If you would like to help us to achieve a Return of Steam to Como, Visit our website at http://www.southparkrail.com for details on how you can aid us in our efforts.

Thank you for your support.

I'm happy for their success so far, but Como always had a future with or without it.

The group is a hardworking bunch of volunteers who have done a great job up there. It is worth a visit just to see the restored station, and the new track in front of it. I really enjoyed meeting them last summer.

If you are a fan of narrow gauge, check out the web page http://www.southparkrail.com/ for lots of interesting info, you will enjoy it for sure.

Rail and some ties have been acquired for expansion of the track to the roundhouse and a partial restoration of the yard, a boxcar has been acquired for display and a passenger car(Georgetown Loop converted gondola) has also been acquired for use with the steamer. The roundhouse pit has been excavated and repairs are being done to the turntable. Even tho the locomotive has not been identified it is worth supporting. Anytime a loco is restored to operating condition, we should support it if we can.

I have been very impressed with this group, and hope you will all consider giving at least a small donation.

Bill

It’s just a personal opinion but without the efforts of the Denver South Park & Pacific Historical Society, History Colorado, The Como Civic Association and a number of other groups, along with the private citizens that have owned and repair and spent their own money on the roundhouse and the depot and the hotel over the last few decades, I doubt Como would have much of a future.

My title on this thread was never intended to mean that Como now has a future because of the South Park Rail Society. I’m sorry Dave if that’s what it implied. My error. The SPRS is just the next step building upon the groundwork done by (and STILL being done by) many people and organizations that want to see Como have a .... “more interesting” future by preserving it's past.

To Finders: We are not at liberty to go into detail about the locomotive just yet. The previous owner doesn’t want the attention as he has had security issues in the past. So he has asked us to not identity it until we have moved it off the property. And since he has been very supportive of us and the Como Project, we felt this was a reasonable request.

Thanks for the support Bill. We hope you and all the other readers/posters here can make it up to Como to see many of the developments that are currently in "the works" for now and the next few years.

What can you tell us about the turntable and the plans for it?

The ex-owner of the roundhouse is working on getting the turntable installed and operational by late this summer.

The ring rail still needs to be purchased and installed but the center bearing and the end guide wheels are in the roundhouse right now. They also need to fabricate a few other pieces but progress is being made.

So, umm, not trying to start a sub topic within a topic, but you might want to check this post out.

Very odd to hear that news will happen for this particular engine. Can't wait to hear it!

(Note this post is referring to the Turntable mostly, but it's very odd to hear about actual news regarding such engine, as they just restored her (cosmetically) not too long ago)

It's better that someone take care of the 268. Just because it was recently restored does not mean it won't still need occasional attention.

The people at South Park rail have confirmed that the engine to be sent to the Como Depot is Klondike Mines 2-6-2 #4. Here is the official link to their Facebook page with the announcement: https://m.facebook.com/southparkline/
