The Northern Ohio Railway Museum, in northeast Ohio, has joined the fraternity of operating trolley museums. This is an event that has been anticipated for a long time. Today we gave demonstration trolley rides to our first paying passengers with runs from 11am to 3pm. We used Shaker Heights Rapid Transit Car 12. This car was built in 1914 by the Kuhlman Car Company of Cleveland. This day of operation allowed the museum to check off the final goal in its mission statement. "Our goals are to collect, preserve, restore, display and operate streetcars and other railway equipment for the education of the public. We are happy to report the day went well and many happy passengers were the result. Most of our passengers were families, many with small children. Most of those young kids were sporting Thomas the Tank Engine attire. Never underestimate the power of the little blue engine on our industry! Concerning the kids attire, at the end of their visit they were still wearing their Thomas gear, but many had they had some new kid sized attire with a distant cousin of Thomas on it, Shaker Car 12! If your wondering, the shirts are also available in adult sizes. It was a good day in the Museum store too! Video of the day has been posted at the Northern Ohio Railway Museum Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/Northern-Ohio- ... 544183676/ The museum is taking this step into public operation slowly and will be operating on the second Saturday of each month. Our next public operation day will be July 8th. Come for a visit and take a ride with us. Steve Heister Northern Ohio Railway Museum http://www.northernohiorailwaymuseum.org

It is always good to see more rail preservation activities taking place in Ohio. NORM has a large property and I expect this museum to continue to grow into the future. Congratulations! |

My regular speech is that Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and Illinois used to be the heart of the electric interurban network *slaps side of South Shore or Sacramento Northern car here*. Since then, the number of new electric rail starts (not extensions) in those states (not tendrils of out-of-state systems have been scarce. So lighting up a new section of wire is kind of a big deal. |
