Interested in knowing a 'ballpark'cost of laying about 40 miles of track with used rails and ties. This is for construction on the old Newfoundland rwy which still has the roadbed. Thanks.
First lets be clear that we are talking in Canadian dollars. To lay the narrow gauge track on an existing roadbed with a combination of relay and new ties and rail similar to what was there originally can be done for about $70 to $100 per foot. This depends on several factors including the amount of ballast/cinders available on the roadbed, the condition of bridges, and in general any needed drainage improvements.
Other items which add cost are rebuilding grade crossings, brush cutting and highway crossing signals.
