Saddest part is how quickly things have deteriorated and gone missing in just 3 years since the 2014 picture, but nothing too bad in the time frame of the 2010-2014 pictures. |

I inspected this equipment in 2015 and contacted the owners to make an offer. Not a no, but a HELL NO. Got the old "We have plans for it..." The only thing wrong at the time was some wiring pulled from under one of the coaches, and the traction motor leads cut underneath. Otherwise everything else was complete on the loco and the cab was locked up. Now look at it... RJ Corman owns the tracks they are sitting on, and at the time there were no washouts or other major blockages and she could have been repaired and gotten to interchange. As I understand it now there are several washouts some major. The roads in and out would make a snake dizzy. The only way she is coming out of there now without major trackwork is in little pieces in the back of a scrappers truck. Sad. |

The line was never owned by RJ Corman as far as I know, it was owned by the coal mine - National Coal Corporation. RJ Corman had a contract to operate the coal trains for the mine to deliver them to Oneida, Tennessee, one of several companies that had the contract over several years. At first, quite a bit of track work was conducted, including replacing at least one bridge. However, this ended as the coal business went away. In March 2008, I and the Southern Appalachia Railway Museum operated a charter over the line using this equipment, and a hirail truck north of the missing bridge. While the weather wasn't the greatest, the trip was a great day. I looked at doing the charter again a year or so later, but met with RJ Corman who said that the excursion operator wasn't allowed to operate because they had violated a number of operating and safety rules and the FRA was involved. Apparently, one of the excursion train's officers took the locomotive out and operated past his limits, hitting a track inspector's hirail. This was in an area with no cell or radio service. That was the operating end of the operation as a number of requirements came about due to this issue. It is sad to see the equipment still sitting there, basically abandoned. |

Thanks for the clarification on the ownership of the line. That would be a good reason to not let them operate anymore. |

Won't shoot you as the messenger Andy. Perhaps one of those -Producer Warnings- of "Viewer Discretion Advised" applies. John |
