Good Evening, I am interested in learning about the various HEP generator types and the operations and limitations. I am looking for the nuts and volts mechanics of HEP type information. Being someone who has had an interest in both electricity and generators for many years I am branching out my studies to include the AC and DC HEP systems used by passenger trains. Any links to websites or PDF documents for different makes of HEP generators would be appreciated. Robert |

For Amtrak-compliant HEP on private cars this website has some good information: http://www.nwrail.com/distributed_produ ... index.html For HEP on commuter locomotives I would recommend buying a MotivePower MP36-3C or MP40-3C operators manual or locomotive service manual, sometimes available on eBay. They generally have a very good description of the CAT generator unit and the HEP system. Also Google this document: APTA PR-E-RP-016-99 (Recommended Practices for 480 Volt Head End Power Systems) PC |

The link below has a listing of Amtrak drawings in regards to the current HEP system that is used by Amtrak. There are also references to the older DC power systems. Ed http://www.rpca.com/webpages/resourcelibrary.htm |

Thank you everyone for the information. As for commuter locomotives I was specifically thinking of the old GE U34CH and EMD F40PH locomotives. Robert |
