Some interesting dollar figures in this Flimsies item on the proposed purchase of the dormant Nevada Northern line from Los Angeles Water & Power. Note the cost of acquisition and repair is less than some bike paths or highway interchanges...

The first, mission-critical step is finding $700,000 to purchase the NN right-of-way from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. It doesnÂ’t seem like an exorbitant price for about 120-miles of railway that would be the final physical piece needed.

All the historic railway facilities at Ely are in place, owned by either the city or the state of Nevada. Almost all of the museumÂ’s collection of rolling stock and motive power is indigenous to the NN. And the repository of records at the East Ely Railroad Depot Museum is remarkable.

IÂ’ll be in Ely later this month and hope to gather some new information about their progress in securing funds.
